Pipe smoking does seem to be part of the 50s dad of the nuclear family that also reads the newspaper and gives sage advice to the children when he's not hard at work.
When I was a kid, I never really thought about the contradiction of trying to get people to eat healthy while also smoking tobacco. He's got his vitamin C, but he's ruining his lungs.

Meh, we minimize one set of risks while ignoring another. Not so much a contradiction as a compromise with life (and, inevitably, death). I suppose that if we didn't do this we'd be crippled by inaction. There's no shortage of things trying to kill us (or ways in which we're killing ourselves).

As for Carlson objecting to women not being sexualized, I'm not surprised. When I worked at the Bunny Ranch, there was a big picture in the parlor, showing Carlson happily hanging out with the owner of the establishment. I'm not saying he ever availed himself of the Ranch's services (I really don't know), but Mr. Bowtie Conservative certainly didn't have a problem with glad-handing Dennis Hof.
