Quote:Stephen Hawking comes out: ‘I’m an atheist’ because science is ‘more convincing’ than God

Quote:“Before we understand science, it is natural to believe that God created the universe,” the world-famous theoretical physicist told Jauregui. “But now science offers a more convincing explanation.”

“What I meant by ‘we would know the mind of God’ is, we would know everything that God would know, if there were a God, which there isn’t,” he added. “I’m an atheist.”

It's distressing that theists have tried to use Hawking as a fellow theist, while at the same time many of those same theists deny large parts of biology, cosmology, and other sciences.
In every country and every age, the priest had been hostile to Liberty.

As a general rule, theists are shameless.

Waiting for Pat Robertson or some other prominent fundie to tell us that Hawking's physical ailment is "punishment from god."
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

Wait...What?

Theists dishonest?

Tell me it ain't so.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

It's impressive that Christians would use one common phrase "the mind of God" as proof that Hawking was a believer.

Or they'll say that Hawking just hates God due to his ailment.

That's a shame. Now they'll have to fall back on mischaracterizing Einstein's view of theism and lying about Darwin's death.

Now if we can just get them to stop calling the Higgs boson the God particle....

Science cannot explain everything. For example, science cannot explain why humans have a conscience.
