Certainly not without staff asking you first why you are using one.

Well, not just for using a proxy per se. There were a lot of separate elements combined, the proxy thing was one part of it. If she had given us a convincing reason that it was for a genuine purpose, then fine. We'd likely have got her on the trolling alone. She simply made it a bit easier.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

Yeah, there were several things behind the scenes that added to the toll, but if you hide your IP as a new user who is also trolling hard, then you don't give an adequate reason why you were using two different confirmed proxies in a matter or hours...that's a count.
If a tenured member were to state using a proxy, we'd not only likely never notice, but we wouldn't care even if we did notice. It only disrupts forum functionality when we need to cross check your true IP against existing members.

Indeed...
I'd suggest someone rephrase that reason for the ban, then... It's inaccurate and has been gnawing at me since I saw it this morning.

Using a proxy is only against the rules so far as when it disrupts the staff's ability to do their job. She wasn't banned for using a proxy, she was banned for trolling and disrupting forum functionality by using a proxy.

Somebody had better answer that damn phone...
BECAUSE I FUCKING CALLED IT!
Verbatim from the mouth of Jesus (retranslated from a retranslation of a copy of a copy):
"Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you too will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. How can you see your brother's head up his ass when your own vision is darkened by your head being even further up your ass? How can you say to your brother, 'Get your head out of your ass,' when all the time your head is up your own ass? You hypocrite! First take your head out of your own ass, and then you will see clearly who has his head up his ass and who doesn't." Matthew 7:1-5 (also Luke 6: 41-42)

Come now... you don't disrupt forum functionality BY using a proxy.
We even have a nice list with examples of how you can disrupt forum functionality:
Quote:Disrupting Forum Functionality
Attempting to disrupt or disable forum functionality, through any means possible is not allowed. This includes but is not limited to the following behaviors:
Removing all content from posts.
Attempting to bypass the permissions system to gain access to forums which are restricted.
Attempting to access other member's accounts.
Uploading malicious files, either by using the attachment functionality, or by storing the file within the database.
Attempting to exploit bugs or vulnerabilities in the forum software or the server on which the forums run.
Organizing or participating in denial of service attacks against the forum.
It is true that I've been seeing a lot of errors, today, due to server overload.... so, maybe, now, someone is disrupting forum functionality.... but those need not be members...

It disrupts the staff's functionality because we can't properly compare the IP address to other members, when we have a good reason to do so.

Well then... you must use some other means of ascertaining sock-puppetry. Sometimes, it's easy... sometimes, not so... c'est la vie.
I'd rather live with a sock behind a proxy, than impose that everyone who chooses to use one must have a damn good reason to use it.
