RE: Why are people offended by insults?
I think the level of offence varies entirely on how much value I give to that person. If it's a person who's regularly and arse I don't even hear it. If it's someone I respect and admire then I get frustrated. The only offense I ever feel, that comes from without, is the frustration of ignorance. That's different than getting insulted by someone I love and hold dear. The more emotional investment I have in someone, the more they have the ability to hurt me (different than frustration). I simply don't get emotionally attached to anyone except my wife and 2 or so close life-long friends.

I have certainly heard that to be the case.

On some occasions it can be the other way around though. For example. You can more easily tell when someone you love and/or a good friend is only joking and they don't really mean their insult. However with a stranger or a less well known person, it might be harder to tell so you might be more likely to take it personally.

That's from what I've observed in others.

Sometimes I feel I WANT to be offended by at least SOMETHING to feel more human.

I think that's more dependant on whether you're built for in-dependance (no pun intended) or co-depandance. It's flipable based off the level of contentment with yourself.

Being self-conscious about a personal trait (or flaw, etc) opens a window to taking offense to an insult.

If someone is legitimately concerned about their weight and how others see it, being called a fatass will hurt.

Maybe they have emotions and feelings? Just a guess.

So do I. And so do others who aren't offended/aren't easily offended. And so I consider that an obvious statement in itself - yet irrelevant Tongue

If you're not offended it isn't a very good insult. People will use insults to get the better of you. Put you down amongst your piers. You could lose out, and you have an inbuilt reaction designed to defend yourself and your share of the pie.

Yar, it just be last week that a dirty sea-faring scoundrel docked at me pier and spoke ill of my mother.
