Heywood obviously gets wood at the thought of Saudi Arabia, China & Israel getting a huge voice in our elections, but I don't like it one bit.
Mary T Biskup donated $175,000 via the internet to the Obama campaign....except she didn't. Somebody was using pre-paid credit cards to donate and used her name. They would have gotten away with it if they just changed the name every time they hit the $2300 limit. "Dark money" will come into the campaigns regardless of SuperPacs and Citizen united. Obama raised hundreds of millions of dollars via the internet. He busted campaign fund raising records....I wonder how much of that was fraudulent or from foreign donors.
FWIW...McCain was receiving donations from Jesus.
Do I like the fact that money is probably pouring into these campaigns from outside the country? I do not. However I don't like the thought of restricting the speech of our own citizens either. If we are going to have unfettered free speech in this country....we're going to have to accept the fact that there will be holes outside countries can exploit to give money to candidates.
If you really want to limit the amount of money that can be spent on campaigns....tax it progressively. The first 100 million is exempt. The next 100 million is taxed at 10%. The next 100 million is taxed 25% and so on.
No need to ban people from making movies or publishing books prior to an election.
