Because easy access is not the reason for suicide, merely the means. The U.S. has a fairly low suicide rate compared with most of Europe:
11 per 100,000 in 2002, just a tad below Canada. The global average is 16 per 100,000. The U.K. is down at 7, but France weighs in at 18, and Finland at 20.3. Switzerland 17.4 and Belgium at 21.1.

Precisely. Some part of me doubts that a teen says to themselves:
"I'm going to kill myself because I have easy access to a gun".
More like
"I'm going to kill myself with this gun I have easy access to because.........."
When we're done locking all the guns away we'll have to hide the fist sized rocks and put bars on all the windows. Or we could save all the wasted effort and ideological compromise and, well...do something that we might reasonably expect to affect change.
