Beltway Whining Over Political Division in America

Beltway Whining Over Political Division in America
I just saw this video about Ben Stein, who apparently is an expert on something or other since people seem to want to put a microphone in front of him, and once again we have an example of Republicans accusing the President of "dividing the nation" or "being the most divisive president in our nation's history".

The quote I'm responding to is at the very beginning of the video.

http://crooksandliars.com/2014/11/ben-st...s-pathetic

Apart from the comical projection, paranoid crackpottery and perplexing assertions that Obama is even left wing, never mind radical leftwing, I'm always amazed at the conservative whines and pearl clutching over how divided America has become and it's all the fault of this (sarcasm) scary black man in the White House.

Excuse me, weren't you people the ones who used "wedge issues" in your political strategy during the last administration? Weren't you the ones who demonized the political opposition and critics as "traitors" during the last administration? Does the term "50+1" ring a bell?

This isn't an accusation. This was your published strategy, which you publicly discussed without any hint of shame. You gave no sign that you cared at all about the partisan divides you fostered ten years ago. You were too busy strutting about shouting "we won, you lost, get over it". As long as you managed to squeak out that magic "50%+1" number, by hook, by crook or any other means necessary, you couldn't have cared less about the rest of the nation.

Division was your means. Power was your only end.

And that strategy wasn't abandoned when the scary black man invaded your White House and stole your birth right to rule the land as white Republican men, was it?

Obama had barely taken his oath of office when your leaders made it their "#1 priority" to "make Barack Obama a one term president". Good thing the nation wasn't mired in two quagmire wars and suffering from an economic calamity not seen since the Great Depression, huh?

For the GOP, it's partisanship first, country a very distant second.

And the scary black man offered you olive branch after olive branch, and finally chopped down the whole damn olive tree as a gift to you. He squandered his own mandate, threw his base under the bus and unconditionally gave an effective blanket pardon to all the abuses of the previous administration, all in a vein effort to heal the divides of our nation.

But your hatred of all people different and your insatiable lust for power could not be appeased, could it? A year ago, your foaming hatred brought the nation, and with it, the entire world, to the brink of financial calamity and political disaster, the likes of which Osama Bin Laden could never even dream of inflicting upon us. You did it all as a political stunt, heedless of your fellow human beings who would suffer for it. Fortunately, the relatively sane faction in your ranks blinked at the 11th hour and thus America was saved with a mere $24 billion in damages to our economy.

And yet, the very peddlers of "wedge issues" and "50+1" now have the gall to publicly whine and shed big salty tears about all this division and rank partisanship that plagues our nation. This is what you wanted. This is the America you worked so hard to create. Don't blame the scary black man in the White House. These Rovian strategies of division were your celebrated tactics long before Obama was even a Senator.

But that's not the worst part. Do you know what's really galling?

No one, absolutely no one, in our nation's media will ever call any of these pigs out on their hypocritical pearl clutching and faux-resentment over our nation's political divide nor will anyone in our media ever fact check their baseless assertions that Obama is to blame for the partisan divide. Their bullshit assertions will simply be allowed to go unchallenged as the moderator looks the other way.

Know-nothing hacks like Ben Stein, who aren't even qualified to be in front of the microphone in the first place, will never have to worry about being on camera and have a reporter or anchorperson ever ask them any questions that start with, "hey, weren't you guys..." Every moderator, anchorperson and reporter knows the day they do is the day they lose their job.

Pigs will be pigs. Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin, Ben Stein, et. al. will always be with us. The real crime is we have a media who will both give them a platform and never hold them to account.

RE: Beltway Whining Over Political Division in America
I think the division is inherent in the 'winner take all' nature of the American political system. Parties become more and more polarized until one of them breaks, then we start over. It would take a Constitutional amendment to fix. I think the Republicans will be the next party to break. I regard the two parties basically switching sides on civil rights issues in the sixties to be the last such break (remember when MLK could be a Republican?), I think this time the social conservatives will spin off into a third party in disgust as their power wanes, leaving a more libertarian-leaning Republican party that essentially agrees with the Democrats on most civil rights issues and they'll mostly squabble over budgets. I think it will be an improvement.

The two problems are:
1. While the Republicans have moved crazy right, the Democrats haven't run to the left. Quite to the contrary, the Democrats have chased the GOP to the right. So now we have a far right and a center right party.
2. The media refuses to report on the problem except to vapidly play the "both sides" narrative. Only those outside of America see the situation for what it is. Compared to the rest of the developed world, our idea of "liberal" is the rest of the world's idea of "moderate conservative".

I'd love to see a liberal party. That would not only be an improvement but a transfiguration of American politics.

Aside from the presidency....republicans control this country despite being the smaller party. Republicans control both houses of congress. Most state houses, and most of the governorships. The reason this is the case is because the democrats embraced corporatism and moved left.

Moved left?

Sonnyboy, in what alternate universe have you been living and how can I move there?

Just to offer one example of Democratic rightward drift (or in some cases, lurches), let's look at Obama's signature piece he's best know for: "Obamacare".

The Affordable Healthcare Act, aka Obamacare, is based on a plan hatched by the Heritage Foundation, promoted by Newt Gingrich in response to the Clinton plan for healthcare, run as part of Bob Dole's campaign in 1996, implemented by Governor Mitt Romney and upheld by the Roberts court.

But you're probably one of those crackpots who think Obamacare is socialism, don't you? I can only imagine how your head would explode if liberals had gotten what they wanted: Medicare For All.

That's just one example. I could go on but I'm really getting tired of schooling you.

You think I haven't heard these left wing talking points before....Sonnyboy? Before Obamacare was passed the leftwing talking points were that the republicans had no good ideas. Where is the republican plan they would ask. Now that Obamacare has turned into a disaster....its suddenly the republicans plan. You lefties are a bunch of liars.

Obamacare isn't socialism....I never said it was.....its corporatism. And sonnyboy....don't claim this was a rightwing concoction. The Heritage foundation held the view that as technical matter some form of requirement to purchase universal health care was needed to prevent adverse selection. Do you know what adverse selection is? This was a view held by everyone with half a brain..

The alternative plan to Hillary care was decidedly different than Obamacare. It didn't push people to get healthcare coverage for their own good, but to protect others. The requirement to purchase coverage focused on catastrophic costs...not routine costs. It also differed in that it did not mandate a new tax be levied against those who don't purchase health care insurance. What it did do is offer generous a tax credit if you did buy health insurance.

What was proposed in the early 90s in response to Hilliary Care was decidedly different than Obamacare. It was certainly not anything embraced by the right wing electorate...thats for sure.

Universal Health Care coverage, amnesty for illegal aliens, huge government "stimulus" projects, are all part of the extreme left wing platform that Obama and his cohorts have embraced. The nation doesn't like it...hence the reason why republicans control most of government.

The smaller group controlling the country won't last. The current president is barely farther to the left than Reagan was.

Sonnyboy....."disaster" is used loosely here. Its not a disaster in the sense that hundreds of thousands of people are dying. Its a disaster in the sense that it is an utter fiasco. People are having their policies canceled...rates are rising....its exceeding cost...etc. If I had said it was a "trainwreck" even though Obamacare has nothing to do with trains, would you nitpick like you've done here?
