Hawken any good, I half dl'ed it and then forgot about it till you mentioned it? POE is great, btw, for that nostalgic "choose the game over the girl" feeling from my D2addicted days.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Hawken is pretty good for a F2P. My fiances oldest digs it & isn't half bad at it. It's mech Deathmatch, but it's not a mech simulator like Mechwarrior. The controls are pretty easy to get used to.

Everquest II
You can play a LOT of content without paying a penny. Subscribers get access to better spells and gear, but really that mainly matters only at the level cap.
EQII also has a pretty good crafting system, and you can buy and decorate houses. Much to do in this game.

Although I quit it back in 2012 for not caring for the overall direction of the game, it is probably my favorite post 2005 era mmo. I've recently returned to my roots in original Everquest, which also has a ftp model, but I can understand why some might be turned off by the old school graphics and game play, for it is not forgiving and it will not hold your hand or cut your cookies for you.
