Teacher may lose job after derogatory comments about her students on Facebook

Teacher may lose job after derogatory comments about her students on Facebook
Teacher dares vent about her students to her socio-political circle on Facebook (a private entity) and may lose her job over it. What the fuck?

I can get the professional standards when one acts as a public figure - Facebook, however, is a private entity. Why is is that people can get fired over personal endeavors? It makes no sense.

PZ Myers Wrote:Hussain is an eighth grade science teacher in North Carolina who was getting harrassed by bible-thumping students in her classroom — harrassment that was apparently encouraged by their red-necked ignorant parents. The kids were giving her Bibles and Jesus postcards and reading Bibles instead of doing their classwork, and seemed to have enjoyed flaunting their dumb-ass religiosity at her. So she vented on Facebook. The parents got indignant that she would dare to express her unhappiness with their darling little children, and are pressing to have her fired — but the curious thing is that the only comments they quote all seem reasonable and moderate.

She didn't actually write anything derogatory herself, it was the responses of her friends that would qualify, none of which are her responsibility.

Those fucking little 8-year old brats. Well kids will be kids, especially christian kids.

But she should have been careful especially on the internet.

Anyone especially hackers can find info on anyone on the internet, me mum even told me there are these people that business hire to find juicy gossip on the people that they would give a job to. That is why I keep my facebook page polished, and I make sure I don't have offensive behavior on their.

That's why I lock my facebook, because it's attached to my real name.

I've had a Facebook account for over a year. It's open. No one has ever posted a comment.

I put this down to two things;

(1) The content is as boring as dog shit. --it's only photos of my city and surrounds. No intimate stuff at all.

(2) I only accept friend requests from people with whom I have some familiarity.

If you want to see if I exaggerate, the account name Tarquin Shagnasty which is my real name. (It's Irish, and pronounced Shaw-ness-ee)Tongue

PS the teacher is an idiot.

I think that the people of Planet Earth should have a cup of 'Harden the Fuck Up' the red-neck parents of those stupid little school kids in particular.

It's stupid. The private life and writings of a teacher is none of the school's business. The teacher will go to court, get a settlement, and find a better job hopefully.

Yes it's stupid. The teacher is in the right and will lose the war.

She really should have known better. Civil servants know not upset those in the sheltered workshop. (in the US I gather that includes school boards)

Perhaps, but getting a job? Not a chance. School's are inherently timid (at least in the US) and the paying rate for teachers is incredibly low, making an impossible situation where even the most milquetoast candidate can be shot down on grounds of being too great a risk to the district.

Seen it happen too many times and have talked with teachers about their rather miserable experience. The few who do well are active in pursuits outside of school, have connections, and are genuinely happy with their jobs. The rest are rather jaded, frustrated people, unable to teach the way they think is most effective due to policy and state standards boards (and conduct laws) and unable to redo their career path.

Being a teacher sucks in the US.

She is not a federal employee - but yes, she will lose the war, one way or another, by virtue of having offended the community, and by extension, school district at large.

Still, I hope that a judge will pass a ruling favorable to common sense.
