Except nothing is wasted anywhere except here on Earth. We don't spend money on other planets. The average Hollywood summer blockbuster budget would fund thousands of more worthy causes; do you consider that money wasted too?

I'm curious to know why some people think that scarcity of resources/overpopulation on Earth would be the spur that would finally cause our species to band together for an interplanetary colonization project when slaughter, conquest, and the appropriation of others' resources would be (1) cheaper and (2) more in keeping with our often ignoble history. I forget who mentioned it, but I agree that this sort of project would only come about in earnest in the face of an outside threat that we couldn't ignore, e.g., looming alien invasion, the mother of all comets, etc.

Limited resource will assuredly run out if we spend it preserving our planet rather than going to new ones.

But you see, NASA has been bled out because there's much more profit to be made by going to war.

Europe is doing fine right now with ESA as the landing on the comet has shown. But no continent, let alone country can do it alone. And there's absolutely no sign for a concerted effort on the horizon.

Space technology continues to improve, so it seems likely it will at least reach a point where transporting people to Mars in very small groups will at least become feasible, and there are plenty of people who would volunteer for it.

Does mars even have gravity?

Yes, it's about a fourth of Earth's.

Will man kind ever come back?

As long as there is a viable Earth to which to come back.

The answers aren't really knowable with certainty. There could turn out to be insurmountable problems of which we are not now aware, or our capability in space could degrade for various reasons rather than advance. But the best guess in my opinion is that eventually people will live on Mars.

The annoying thing about mars seems to me in the long run that the atmosphere is so thin. Now Venus, there's something you can work with!

It might be a lot easier to add atmosphere than subtract it. The atmosphere of Venus is super-dense.

However, it might be easier for microbial life to survive in the clouds of Venus than on the surface of Mars. Maybe a carbon-eating microbe that falls to the surface when it dies could get that inconvenient carbon surplus out of the atmosphere.

Exactly my crackpot proposal!
1. Turn venus' co2 into useful carbon microbially and reduce the greenhouse effect at the same time!
2. Profit!
