The Road to Glendale: NFL Playoffs discussion
RE: The Road to Glendale: NFL Playoffs discussion
I don't think it is even remotely possible that either would be DQ'd from the Super Bowl. Even if they both came out today and said, "Yeah we did it, and we've been doing it all year," the NFL would make a ruling about it, oh, in March some time. Even ESPN is calling for a full year if it's found that Belichick was in on it, and a couple of games if it's Brady. One of them is going to be on the hook for it, but the NFL won't let it ruin their big party.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

They'll kick the can until after the Pro Bowl, and get it done quickly so it won't mar the draft runup.

The NFL decided a couple of years ago that nobody gives even a quarter of a shit about football after the Super Bowl is over, so they moved it to the week before. The Pro Bowl is this Sunday.

Your point stands, though. They will try to minimize it and play up any other storyline, then make a ruling a couple of weeks after the Super Bowl.

I hope they suspend Belichick and Brady. Likely the Patriots will pay off some poor equipment boy to make a statement saying he did it.

Yeah, you can tell I don't watch it, right? Big Grin

I agree that both of need punched in the mouth -- just joking!-- but yeah, Belichick in particular hasn't learnt to abide the rules even after previous run-ins ... he knows the rules better than most coaches, and that leads me to believe he'll circumvent them whenever possible. What schmuck.

People watch the Pro Bowl? It's like watching touch football, as far as I'm concerned. Not even sure why they select defensive players. :p

The thing is - it seems like he and Brady said something about that it wouldn't be a big advantage. Well, duh - but pushing lots of small edges is a thing, Pretty sure he's been around long enough to know this.

Fuck him and his shitty team.

I can't wait to see where this fervor is a week from now... Panic

This seems like a good explanation from a scientific perspective: http://dailycaller.com/2015/01/23/physic...nce-video/

Based on what Brady has said in interviews (that he prefers the ball inflated to the NFL minimum) it's perfectly reasonable to expect the balls to become "deflated" due to the temperature outside changing the pressure in the balls. If the Colts had their balls inflated to the NFL max (or near to it) then their balls would also deflate, but not to below the NFL minimum.

Hrm... that seems a little drastic. A full 2 psi for a 30° drop? I ran the numbers, and it looks like it's more like 11.7 psi.

Ideal Gas Law is PV=nRT = (Pressure in N/m²)(Volume in m³)=(number of moles)(Gas Constant in (N·m)/(mol·K))(Temperature in K)

Pressure = 12.5 psi (lower end) = 86184.5 N/m²
Volume = 4237 cm³ = .004237 m³
We'll solve for n
R= 8.314 (N·m)/(mol·K) = 8.314 J/(mol·K)
T = 70° F = 294.3K

So, (86184.5)(.004237)=n(8.314)(294.3)
n=.149 mol

Let's plug it back in to the equation with a different Temperature. (The number of moles will be constant with no gas leaving the balls.) This is also not accounting for any nominal volume change. If the volume of the ball goes down, then the pressure change would actually be smaller.

We're solving for the new pressure now with the temperature drop (40° F = 277.6K), so:

(P)(.004237 m³)=(.149mol)(8.314 J/(mol·K))(277.6K)

P = 81162.85 N/m² = 11.7 psi

So that's less than a 1 psi drop in pressure due to temperature change alone.

I call into question any article citing "science" while also claiming this:
Daily Caller Wrote:The hypocrisy in this scandal is indicative of Roger Goodell’s tenure as NFL commissioner. Whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty? The NFL wants the Patriots to be guilty because it’s become a mouth piece for the liberal agenda. (RELATED: NFL Hires Major Democrat To Head Up Deflate-Gate Witch Hunt)
