Yet another accidental shooting.

Yet another accidental shooting.
Police chief accidentally shoots his wife in the back while she was sleeping.

Is this tragic accident a reason to ban guns? Obviously not. In the thread about the toddler who accidentally shot and killed his mother I wrote this:

Some will use their privacy to conceal child molestation or the cooking of meth or some other dastardly deed. People have the right to carry weapons and because that right exists some bad things will come of it.....like this tragic accident.

Now we issue police officers guns in order facilitate them doing their jobs. Because they are issued guns, some bad things will result from it. This incident is one of those bad things. It is certainly not a reason to ban guns any more than the toddler accidentally shooting his mother is a reason to ban guns.

Uh, I wouldn't even call this a police-related in specific, it's just someone being an utter fucking moron around firearms.

The real problem is a lack of responsibility.

Life is a bitch and shit happens. When they take every last gun from the bad guys, they can have mine.

The utility that issuing guns to police officers provides to us more than compensates for the damage they cause when used irresponsibly. Using this accident as an example of why police should be prohibited from carrying guns would be ludicrous. It is just as ludicrous to use the toddler shooting his mom as an example of why people should not be issued conceal and carry permits.

Making judgement about guns requires looking at the utility and harm they provide in general, and then deciding if it makes sense.

And using that premise, automobiles should be re-evaluated. Far more deaths occur from the automobile. Far more guns have protected life and property,

I am sarcastically using this example to expose the errant thinking of using individual incidents to formulate an opinion about guns.
