Homosexuality a natural gift

Quote:Goa Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar Tuesday said alternative sexual orientation was a 'natural gift' and there was no question of setting up centres in the state to 'cure' LGBT youth with medicine and training.
India seems to have better politicians than USA, in spite of the mindset of their population (look at the comments on that page).

You are right. Hijras, khusras, zenanas, narnbans ( transsexual or transgender people) are openly accepted in many Hindu homes - some of them consider their presence a blessing.
Hijras were also present in Mahabharata and Ramayana.

Maybe also Goa being the wealthiest region in India helps...

The thing about gifts is it all depends on who is the giver and who is the receiver.

"I think I use the term “radical” rather loosely, just for emphasis. If you describe yourself as “atheist,” some people will say, “Don’t you mean ‘agnostic’?” I have to reply that I really do mean atheist, I really do not believe that there is a god; in fact, I am convinced that there is not a god (a subtle difference). I see not a shred of evidence to suggest that there is one ... etc., etc. It’s easier to say that I am a radical atheist, just to signal that I really mean it, have thought about it a great deal, and that it’s an opinion I hold seriously." - Douglas Adams (and I echo the sentiment)

I think modern, Western culture would be much less rich without queer people (I use that in the sense of non-straight laced sexuality, including heterosexual into unusual things). We add to this culture, and frankly, we make sex all around more interesting and fun. Considering the difference between chimpanzee and bonobo cultures - well, having us in the mix lets humanity have the bonobo option.
I've done post-grad work in evolutionary biology and modelling, and I can see how having non-reproductive caregivers can have an overall genetic benefit, or how it can be useful to have humans in a group who focus on things other than childrearing, but I hope we are more than that.
In the future it may very well be possible to select for heterosexuality in your children along with other designer baby traits, perhaps by controlling certain secondary hormones produced during pregnancy. I really hope humanity doesn't go that route. I think you would be lessened, even though our lives are often more difficult than those of 'straight' kids.
Just saying.

Homosexuality is certainly a gift to the world, as it helps to keep the population down.

Well, no, it doesn't. If it did, it wouldn't have evolved. Does that make sense?

Yes that does make sense, but still the buffer was always there, just keeping things balanced.
