MS, nothing you offer will entice me away from my beloved Linux Mint. Sorry!

I'm still using XP even though I've got an upgrade to 7. It works. No fanboi stuff for me.

What's the catch? What could possibly be up Microsofts sleeve?

Skeptical though I was, 7 is XP perfected improved. Smile
Skepticism is not a position; it is an approach to claims.

I have to agree. They finally got it more or less right with 7. Pity 8 was such a disaster.

I'd say I'm satisfied with 7, it's reasonably fast, doesn't crash, it's user friendly and does everything I need it to do. Not perfect, but it's pretty good

I hate to say it, but I'm one of those nut jobs who's satisfied with 8.
Granted, this was after some tweaking and modding to bypass the Metro screen entirely and get back a "real" start menu, but from a technical standpoint it runs fine.
Although, the last version I was running was Vista, so I might not be one to talk. Tongue Plus, I really do miss the Aero glass look of Vista/7. W8 just looks so... blah.. compared to that.

8 is a fucking pain in the ass for admins.

But for end-users, once they bypass the idiocy of the touch-screen interface with Classic Shell (or a similar tweak) it's certainly tolerable. As long as you're using it on a stand-alone home PC instead of trying to integrate it into an existing office network, you'll be fine.

However, XP 64 isn't eligible for the free upgrade.

I'll get the free upgrade and play with it, but I'm not expecting to like it. MS has a long history of fixing what's not broken.

It's supposed to be lighter-weight than 8, which for all its faults was an improvement over Win7 in that department.

Ditto. Dual-booting Mint & Win7. Almost never boot into Mint since the only programs I use on a regular basis that have a linux version are QGIS, Google Earth & Firefox.

AutoCAD = nope
ArcGIS = nope
Microstation = nope
MapInfo = nope

Dick move, Microsoft.

Not quite as bad as you've stated. Win7 is still getting security updates till 2020, just won't be getting any new features & I guess non-security related bug fixes.
