Non Traditional Medicine

Non Traditional Medicine
I just read that a lot of things in our body are controlled or affected by the bacteria in our gut. It read that things such as depression, anxiety and schizophrenia could be reduced our cured, made me want to know more.

I have googled a lot about the good bacteria that is responsible for things like stress and depression, but I know I am missing a ton of information.

Christians aren't really into alternative medicine. I have a few friends that are traditional doctors, but I have lost touch with them because of my awful departure from their faith and I am not sure if they would scoff at me for even trying something like this

Last December, I switched to being a vegetarian. I have felt a lot better for it. I am sure there is more than just that. If anyone has any ideas our experiences I sure would like to hear them

Do you know what we call alternative medicine, that's been proven to work?
Medicine.

You can get a tablet that inserts the faecal bacteria from a healthy person into your gut.

This is called a transpoosion.

I haven't even made that up.

Medicine.

That's too flip, what will prove to work and be called "medicine" sometime in the future can still be called "alternative medicine" today.

Medicine certainly has not clinically tested more than a small fraction of the body of "alternative" or "traditional" medicine today, and amongst the untested multitudes, the so called "alternative" medicines cooked up yesterday for infomercials are almost certianly concocted with no basis in any reasonable expectation of clincial benefit.

But some percentage of "traditional" medicine could certainly actually work and had been found so through long experience by societies without access to modern clincial drug and treatment testing.

Sure. And the time to believe that medicine works is when it has been tested and proven to do so. Not before, on the basis that it hasn't been tested yet, so it might work.

Yeah, I'm of the same school of thought as Esquilax here.

I do think there can be useful remedies to be found outside of normal medicine, things that can help with some symptoms, but that shouldn't be confused with real medicine. There's an awful lot of bull shit and con-artistry going on, so I'd say stick to natural remedies and such rather than stuff which makes actual healing claims.

The way to show that any specific "alternative" medicine has been proven to work with a certainty and specificity against a particular ailment equal to a notional modern clincal standards imposed by modern medical and pharmaceutical industry is indeed to wait until modern medicine has gotten around to clincially testing it.

But validity of claims of efficacy is not a binary thing. A entire gradation of differing degrees of certainty, continuous with clincial certainty at the high end, exists below the standard of modern clincial testing. In circumstances where clinically adaquately efficacious medicine is not yet available, and that is In fact true of a large percentage of ailment recognized by modern medicine, then there is nothing amiss with looking at less untested, but not yet full tested, alternatives.

I understand that a group of atheist would be skeptical about anything Big Grin I find that "approved" medicine that the FDA says is good, quite often is reactive instead of proactive. I guess I was looking for somethings that were more proactive then what we have currently.

I agree, what I have read so far seems like snake oil at best, I was just hoping some people had heard or seen other things that actually worked.
