Enlighten Yourselves

RE: Enlighten Yourselves
"That's just the old testament" always annoys me. It takes up two thirds of your book, and is the first impression we get of your deity. The nice things at the end doesn't wash away all the evil stuff in the beginning and middle parts. Not that the last bit is candy and sunshine all the time either. It's especially egregious when you try to claim Jesus and Yahweh are the same person, so you're not left with the excuse that the guy you're worshiping is a different guy that has to be subservient to the overlord as much as you do. The "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" guy is the same guy as the "kill them for not worshiping me" guy.

Or more often the kill them all for not being my chosen people guy.

More often than not when he interacts with his creation, it's to kill them, send people to kill them, or threaten to do so. God of love, he isn't. Including the biblical definition of love.

I've read most of it. It's a pile of shit. And let's face it, some parts are just too boring to wade through.

Anyway, which bible do you suggest we read? There are so many different versions and I'm going to guess that you think yours is "special."

I think the New Testament is more horribly off-putting than the Old Testament. The worst OT god could do is to kill a person who wouldn't suck up to him. The god of the New Testament threatens to torture such people for ever and ever and ever.

Makes me think that anyone who has actually read the bible and believes it yet still claims to "love" god is either too stupid to understand what they've read OR is just a nasty, vicious person who strives to model himself after the way the cruel, hateful bible god is depicted therein — not somebody I'd stoop to associate with, much less take advice from.

Indentured servitude only applied to gods people, they were allowed proper slaves for life from other countries. I'm sure pastors do their best to bring this up every Sunday.

And even then, I find indentured servitude distasteful and immoral on its own merits.

No it's fine, it's exactly the same as working at Tescos.

I agree that reading the Bible can affect someone's life positively. Just not in the way that you are probably imagining.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

I've tried reading it several times. I can't make it past Genesis. It's just so boring, and the bullshit starts right at the first page. It seems better as a tool used to reinforce currently held beliefs than to convince people to join team Christ.
