When Your Kids Make You Feel Old

RE: When Your Kids Make You Feel Old
At 19 my parent's house didn't even have a full line. I don't know the correct technical term in english but it was quartered. Four neighbours shared the same line.

A party line. Those were still around when I was 19, but mostly for people who couldn't afford their own line.

Yeah sure. There's even a song with that title which I tried to remember.

No, it wasn't about affording. It was about the phone company not providing anything else in our area.

All phone systems started out as party lines and single lines came to some places earlier than others. I was just stating that by the time I was 19, single lines were available and becoming affordable.

I learned to program in Basic on our whole school district's one main frame computer which I communicated with via one of the three dial-up modems at the high school. I reserved my time a week in advance because there were 2000 students plus staff to those three modems. Fortunately most of those 2000 weren't remotely interested. To operate the modem you put the phone receiver in a slot and dialed. The interface was not a computer screen. It was a printer a noisy dot matrix printer. The printer printed out what I typed and what the computer responded.

Explaining a mainframe computer to the kids took a while at dinner last night.

I remember being envious when I saw Matthew Broderick operate such an advanced tool in Wargames. I was envious of his whole equipment by the way.

My family's first computer was a Commodore Amiga 500. It was the shit! So many fun games to be played, and it made such good graphics. Well... for 1987.

I grew up on a C64. I missed it. All I did was program in BASIC, though. Still, it was fascinating.

Is that Double Dragon?
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great
