If you're interested in ancient Egypt, check out Ph.D. Bob Brier's lectures on the history of Ancient Egypt. Good stuff, but it's pretty serious. Takes weeks to finish.

Does it have to be an actual history book? 

If not, I would recommend The Captive Mind by Czesław Miłosz.
