Livedie: I know just what you mean. I am equally as baffled. I am stunned every day at the idea of grown adults sitting around talking about childish fairy tales, that they think all this stupid stuff is really going on. They are deluded, living in a cartoon world. For many reasons humans are in general vulnerable to falling for stuff like this, not least because of a desire to be accepted into a group and for validation. People also like to think their life has some sort of "ultimate purpose", it's really an inflated sense of self importance. They want to feel special. God loves them! Them specifically!
This is one of the reasons I'm on here, trying to promote critical thinking, because I see people enslaved by this nonsense. Sadly a lot of people would rather cling to a comforting delusion than accept reality as it is. I just want to scream, "What's the matter with you?" But all we can do is show them atheism is not scary, and life continues just fine without all the fairy dust. If people are brave enough to critically analyse their religion, it will crumble. Sadly, not many are that brave and they are surrounded by people scolding them for even questioning it at all.
The Internet is certainly our best friend, even young children can find out what a load of crap it is before it gets too cemented in their brain. And they can see atheists are not the evil people they are often protrayed as. Atheism is certainly growing, and I feel very confident it will continue to do so.
