Another Good Reason to be a Christian

When it comes to FB I generally block religious sources that pop up on my wall, and suspect my religious friends do the same when I post something regarding atheism or that is irreligious.
Sometimes I do post something smartarse in their posts just to keep them on their toes.
For instance something popped up on my wall with a picture of Jesus and Satan facing off with the comment "which side will you take?"
All the answers were as you'd expect "Jesus!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"  So I responded with "Odin AllFather"

Not saying I don't enjoy seeing the funny atheist stuff you post.  I just don't want to alienate friends over an inconsequential thing like religion.  
I have blocked out my stupid, Morman sister-in-law and her annoying kids.  And I got really tired of hearing how "god was good, everyone got home safely" from an aunt.  I just turned her posts down so I didn't have to see them.  Just once I'd like to hear one of them say "god was a real sonofabitch, no one made it out alive".  I have a second cousin who will probably be the next to go.

There is more good reasons not to be a christian than not to be one i mean look at history.

There is no good reason to hold any religion. Humans have a kneejerk reaction to that statement unfortunately. When you say that they get the stupid idea you are advocating use of force.

It is simply a statement that if you can accept you live without the god beliefs and religions of others then be willing to consider that yours is just as superfluous.

Religion exists because of our species gap filling. It has the placebo effect of creating safety in numbers, but it is only natural in that humans make bad guesses as to the nature of reality, it is a result of human's flawed perceptions.

Dawkins "The God Delusion" is an important book that explains why religion and god claims pop up. Victor Stenger's "The New Atheism" is under valued which is just as important in saying that our species morality is coming from us, not the labels humans invent.

And Hitchens got far to demonized by many skeptics for merely being blunt as to the dark side of what religion does to human thought. Dawkins also in "The Greatest Show On Earth" in his opening places blame on Plato's bad idea of "essence" in the idea if you just simply thought about something long enough you could find it's pure form. That idea since has infected humans who have tried to apply that utopian ideology to politics and religion and economic views, the problem is that we live in a diverse reality and an imperfect reality.

Not even atheists should go about trying to set up a utopia, but in saying that humans need to stop being afraid of letting go of the past. It is not a call to erase history, but to be unafraid to be introspective in considering maybe you don't need that past.

Well said but looking at it now religion really does need to die out but... its our ignorance in the end that keeps it around. Truthfully no religion is right and none of it should be given any special treatment or even be treated like its important. Rather putting religion on a stand saying its important it should be ridiculed for really what it is, the worst part of humanity.

It will never die out, but it must be treated like the poison it is. No different than knowing while that pretty dormant volcano is still a volcano. Humans have rights and that should be a given, but the poison of religion is that far to many people point to the pretty and ignore the dark side.

Humans evolved to make bad guesses, that will always be part of our evolution. But we can work to improve keep those bad guesses from growing like weeds to the point of becoming destructive.

It would be nice if the world would give it up, but that seems to be impractical on a planet of 7 billion and even atheists shouldn't go about trying to push a utopia themselves. I do think it is a good goal though to push people verbally to think and push them to not allow religion to become abusive or demand taboos.

As I was driving home from bible study and worship service today I came to a realization.  It's not that all christians are joyful, even though they should be, but the only people I've come across in my life that I would consider joyful have been christians.  I see joy as different than happiness, in that it is a deeper contentment, and is there whether one's life is going well or not.  It's present even in times of great sickness and dying.  It's knowing that, no matter what happens, things are okay--not just that they will be okay, but they are okay.     

you do realize that every religion feels that sense of entitlement? it's the condition of the human heart to be happy with what it perceives to be a way to see dead people(really that simple). you can't honestly expect this to be worthy of posting. every single religion, from to A to Z, thinks they're on the mission for eternal achievement. it's our brains fault for that sense of euphoria from shit that could never be real. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/real?s=t
