Now that the word marriage has been changed from the legal and sacred union of one man and one woman what DOES it mean? What are the boundaries that distinguish it from other contractual arrangements, social obligations, and familial relationships?

Define Marriage

Exactly the same. Just take out the "one man and one woman" bit.
People act like gay relationships are an alien concept, worlds apart from straight ones. It's exactly the same thing just with two men or two women. Not that hard to grasp.

OP, can you answer that last question for marriage between a man and a woman?

All you need is a dictionary for the main question:
"The legally or formally recognized union of a man and a woman (or, in some jurisdictions, two people of the same sex) as partners in a relationship" http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/defini...ctCode=all For your final question, consult a lawyer in your jurisdiction, as the specific rights and obligations vary by country, and in the U.S., by state. It means what the two parties want it to mean. If they decide it means nothing more to them than a simple legal contract, then that is their choice, yes.
"Sacred" is a red herring. Christians can still stick to just doing what they've always done (since removing polygamy as was the case in the bible). No one is forcing Christians to do anything they don't want to do. Christians, however, are trying to stop other people doing what they want to do by expecting them to bow to the whims of a belief system they are not involved in. Please stop trying to come up with reasons why you can belittle gays. Feel free to send me a private message.

Means whatever one wishes it to mean, but why anyone would want the government involved in their romantic union to another person, is beyond me. Probably not the most helpful answer you'll receive in this thread. lol
It's a contract between two persons (could be more) who wish to grow old together and commit to that goal.
In some places, such commitment is rewarded with a few tax breaks.
Marriage is so sacred to Christians that they need a secular government to issue licenses in order to legitimize it.
One would also expect Christians not to divorce if Mark 10:9 was taken as seriously as the passages invoked to discriminate against homosexuals, but we all know what reality demonstrates in this regard. I wonder if proper Christian bakers are as passionate about not baking cakes for those Christian divorcees that are remarrying?
Marriage is the formal commitment of wanting to make another person happy for the rest of his/her life, and being privileged to try.
On second thought, that's too limited, as it leaved out polyandry, polygamy, line marriage, plural marriage, and so on. As long as two (or more) people have reached the local age of consent, there should simply be no restrictions on who can marry whom. Boru

And take out the "sacred" part because that's just fucking bullshit.
