2009 is still very late in his life. He should have decided this when he was a teenager. In other words, sometime around 1940.

Don't hold your breath.  Since most Southern Baptists are social/cultural conservatives and vote Republican, this will strike them as just another dismissible liberal ploy.  As admirable a man (and ex-President) as I find Carter to be, he remains one of the conservatives' favorite whipping boys.
