The difference is only important in an academic argument. Secular people don't try to legislate who you can have sex with and in what orifice.

You don't understand it - Secularism is for everyone who does not want to live in a theocracy, it's separation of church and state + freedom of religion - It's for all people including religious ones. Seriously, stop pretending atheists have a monopoly of secularism and equating secularist alliances with atheism - In the past (and still today) people who believe have promoted separation because they think religious institutions shouldn't legislate or impact politics. It's basic common sense.

Quote:Yes but secularism is desirable for atheists, because it is society without official religion.
Secularism is basically the State not having a religion and not interfering in religious affairs - It's something desirable to everyone with half a brain... The WBC does not want secularism, nor does Boko Haram, but I think most people in society would not want to be ruled by the church and go back to the dark ages, even the really devout Christians.

No I agree, secular, irreligious, etc., does not = atheism (obviously, although I don't think I implied that), but from my perspective, it is good news nonetheless.

As long as some Holy Joe is not telling some politician what "god" wants in pending legislation it is good enough.

Solid work.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

Yes but secularism is desirable for atheists, because it is society without official religion. If you're trying to stamp out religion entirely, not only is it a waste of time but also it's not ethical.

I have absolutely no issue with secular Christians or Muslims. I may think your beliefs and practices are foolish, but if you're secular about it I think it's petty to come for you for no reason.

I agree.  There are secular Christians, many, I am guessing, are religious but do not go to church often, if at all.  So long as their philosophy is live and let live, they are ok with me.

The right answer is "that's why he had to be crucified, as should the pope and the catholic clergy"

Yes, it's good news indeed. It's particularly important that the world's most powerful country is slowly but surely coming to its senses. Very encouraging. Maybe we'll be up to the European standard of sanity in 20 years or so. Now if we can only drag the Islamic countries into the enlightened age with us.

You mean European where Islam is the most practiced religion? No thanks.

Left of center is not the best view on every issue, in my book. I don't know that voters think with such nuance, either.
