Explain the situation to the person in charge. Offer to take the keys home, but you want to be compensated for your time, petrol, vehicle use and so forth. Alternately, you could flat refuse to take the keys home, since doing so sometimes requires you to work 'off the clock', which create the potential for a huge liability for the store.
I can only foresee two possible outcomes. First, they might see the reason and logic of your position, and either offer to pay you for running the keys over on your day off or not ask you to take the keys home any more. Secondly, they might be so pissed at your snotty attitude that they tell you to begone and never darken their door again. Either way, you win.
