Kudos and the Hard Line

RE: Kudos and the Hard Line
In any case, if kudos triggered a new post, it would solve the problem; and no one could use that to drive up their post count without an accomplice.

In truth, even when I was on Staff I'm quite sure we never had to deal with that issue even once.

I remember several times tbf. One instance, a spammer came on and was posting in multiple threads but no staff members were online but me. As it happens the clean up was relatively straight forward, but it would have made much more of a mess without the timer on posting.

Couldn't we have that ability after say, 1000 posts? By then you're not really post counting anymore.

I never knew/saw that.  At any rate, was it really for the purpose of increase post count though?  More likely it was just a spammer, being a douche bag.

I just don't like it because if I make a long serious post in response to someone, I don't want my flirty response to Beccs tacked on to the end of it.

FWIW, through configuration only, we can do the following -

* Change the post merge time (it's currently at 60 minutes), or disable it entirely.
* Selectively exclude subforums from post merging (like we do in the Mafia subforums).
* Selectively exclude user groups from post merging (like we do for moderators and admins).

Anything more is going to require a plugin (if one exists) or a code change.   From my personal perspective, I'm good with turning it off as an experiment - meaning if it leads to an unnecessarily disruptive forum, it'll get put back the way it was - with the proviso that disruptive abuse would fall under the "No Spamming" rule.  I wouldn't expect that to be an issue with the regular crowd here.

I would like to get input from the rest of the staff as well, especially Tibs as he may have a trick up his sleeve.

Is this something that might be put to an unofficial forum vote right here in this thread ... courtesy your guiding hand CD?

I don't know that it needs to be put to a vote, Cinjin.  If anyone cares to oppose it, they're welcome to have their say here alongside those that want it done.   FWIW, I'm willing to give it a try if the staff doesn't object strenuously.

I'm down. I made a thread in the Staff area to discuss it, but that may be unnecessary.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

Is it possible to automatically add a user to a group based on post count? Then you could "Selectively exclude user groups from post merging" without anyone having to seek to become part of the group.
