Basically my situation is that everything is running slow and jittery, and when I close down my pc I see a flash of a website that I didn't even have up, like I'll close all internet explorer windows, then shut down, but I'll still see windows of internet explorer or something closing down when it shuts down, it's such a quick flash I can't see what it is that's closing down.
Anyone able to explain what this might be? Or the difference between malware and viruses?
I'm on youtube now looking at videos on how to get rid of whatever it is, I just downloaded malwarebites, it's called something like that.
Bold mine. I have identified your problem. Get FF or Chrome, you're welcome. Although you can allow certain malware with them, they are way better than IE. Kill it.
People above have gave also good suggestions to remove it.

I missed that. Yes, get a new browser. IE is about the worst browser out there. I like Firefox, but Google Chrome is good too.

On every PC I own, the IE browser history has exactly one URL in it:
http://getfirefox.com

the 3 tools that can/will solve your issues are Hijackthis, malwarebytes, and a good anti virus program.
go to control panel / programs and see if you can uninstall stuff that got put there inadvertently.
What I can stand is that many legit programs are in bed with others and so installing their program, the check box is already ticked to install some other browser plugin or program.
Many times, when you click express install, it installs all the extra crap you didn't ask for. I found, you need to go to "custom" install to be able to unselect the rubbish.
I would imagine you've got heaps of crap installed. Remember the general golden rule. Nothing is free on the net. (without a catch)

Malwarebytes is a free download, and Avast AV is free security. Download both of them. Identify the problem program(s). Restart your computer in Safe Mode, go into the program's file, and modify its .exe file by renaming it with an extra period in the file's name. Restart your computer in normal mode, fire up Avast, and have it KO the program.

Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.
Impersonation is treason.

Well then, want to watch tv series, porn or any of those kinds of free stuff, there is no browser to save you. You tacitly accept malware.

Spy Bot Search & Destroy is also a good anti malware program.
As an extra to what everyone has said about getting the task manager up and seeing the processes, you don't actually need to check out all the processes that are running.
Run Task Manager (ctrl-alt-delete then select Task Manager)
Select the Processes tab.
Click where it says CPU (at the top of the column, next to Image Name, User name etc)
You'll probably want to click this twice. This orders the processes by CPU usage so you can see which one is causing your processor to grind away making your computer slow.
You may also want to click on the Memory column next to in case the malware is making your computer slow because it's hogging the RAM.
