malware or virus (or both)

No it's not.  The new versions of IE are good.

The problem in this case is that the person has malware on their computer, and has to get rid of it.  In these cases, almost 100% of the time, all the installed browsers are likely to have issues: wrong default page, false redirects, etc.

RE: malware or virus (or both)
Guys, I've through this a million times with my "users" when I was in IT.
Common sense and caution are the 2 best approaches.
You can do anything and download anything, torrents no probs at all.

Just don't click on something which wants to install (either as a prog or browser plugin) itself as part of going to a website.
These are most likely aggressive marketing or downright malware/spyware

By click on something you are not sure about, you are bending over with your arse exposed and saying "give it to me"!
No God, No fear.
Know God, Know fear.
