Do you wish God was real?
#11
RE: Do you wish God was real?
- Can you quickly tell what you mean by God? (and don't say "the Christian God", because that's way too vague).

- Do you mean whether we wish God were real and the world would be as it is now, or do you tacitly admit that a world with a benevolent creator would indeed look very differently from our current one? Because it "sure as heck" doesn't look like a world which has a benevolent God.

In general, I hate the thought of having to die and being completely gone, so I would very much look forward to some form of afterlife if it is set up in any way that isn't mind-numbing.

There is a downside though - the universe is a very wondrous and awe-inspiring place. Having it reduced to the playground of some petty cosmic tyrant would really taint its perceived glory.
The fool hath said in his heart, There is a God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.
Psalm 14, KJV revised edition

Wouldn't say I 'wish' that there was a supernatural god but if one was found and proven to exist then I would be flabbergasted.

If science discovered that a god had created the Universe I would be utterly gobsmacked but very interested in chatting with it for a while.

Unfortunately, not going to happen. I can't really get myself excited enough to wish for something that I know full well won't be true - stopped doing that when I was 8 years old.

A god who created us and got read the riot act about breaking the prime directive in the early days and has since only been allowed to watch from afar with a tear in his eye!
That's my man!

Watch and suffer you bastard!
No God, No fear.
Know God, Know fear.

I'm tempted to say yes so then I can blame all of life's problems on that god instead of finding a more reasonable explanation. Equally, I don't wish there is a god because if one looks at the world around them it becomes clear that god does not value human life. Then again, god must simply be testing these starving people so it's alright, right? The hunger is not due to the West exploiting the Third World or war or politics as things only happen if god will them to happen.

It depends on what you mean by the word, god. The bible's god has too many omni qualities to exist so it is almost impossible to imagine anymore that he would be real.

It would be interesting if there were deities who ruled over each region of the world and would actually have conversations with people.

A deist type god might not even consider itself god or know that humans worship it.

Do you wish God was real?
I used to wish there was something that could help me in times of trouble. It seems so childish to even think about it now.

A supernatural being that created us and loves us? Sure, that could be interesting. If the concept makes sense, then we have an immensely-powerful being who wants the best for us and wants us all to be happy. Which means that instead of forcing us all to go through thousands of years of death, war, disease, misery, and suffering, would figure things out before they could go wrong and we'd all be happy from the very start.

In other words, I'd be happy if a competent god was real.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

A all loving benevolent God that tends to its creation like its children? Sure, sounds great.

Sadly most of the concepts ive seen taken up seriously so far have been remarkably bloodthirsty, sadistic and tyrannical in ways more than somewhat remnicent of Roman Emperors and greedy middle eastern tribal leaders. Not something that appeals one iota.

I don't have the desire for a God because I'm happy with reality. The beauty and sadness and joy and terror and wonder and awe and intricacy of our world and our universe is enough for me. I don't need anything more than 'everything'.

Definitely not the Abrahamic God. I would be in horror if I thought that monster was real.

Another God who really does love us? Maybe. The only real advantage of one would be for an afterlife but that doesn't require a supernatural being. Aliens of sufficient technological development could do that for us if they were so inclined. Eventually, our species will have the power of life and death ourselves so again, no God is needed. It would be nice to have someone there for me, personally when I die but as noted, it wouldn't have to be God.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.
