Old age
#21
RE: Old age
My body is 62 and slowly breaking down ,with a plethora of reasonably serious but not immediately life threatening impairments. Fortunately,my brain still works quite well, although my short term memory is slipping. One reason I inflict myself on a number of forums is to help me stay mentally active.

BUT the person inside feels no different than it did at 20. So far getting older has only been inconvenient. Whereas my enjoyment of life has not diminished, my APPRECIATION of life has increased; I no longer take it for granted.

I'm afraid of losing my independence, such as not being able to drive or look after myself and having to go into one of those horrible places full of old people just waiting to die.My terror is of losing my mind,as did my father and grandfather through arteriosclerosis. I have no fear of being dead, although I'm not looking forward to the experience of dying. I hope I'm asleep at the time.

How good or bad being older is depends largely on one's own attitude and on whether or not one has all of one's marbles.

RE: Old age
Getting old sucks simply because your body gets old. You're weaker, you recover slower, you have to work that much harder at the gym to just maintain or simply not deteriorate at a rapid pace, your eyesight goes, your hearing goes, your memory, your flexibility, you wake up sore, your teeth fall out, you gray or you go bald (actually that last part i don't care about), your prostate expands, you still want to have sex but you're physically incapable of getting it up, you become incontinent, you have a myriad of health problems and increased chance of cancer, diabetes, and a plethora of other genetic predispositions that have evolved to manifest themselves only after you're past your reproductive age (thank you natural selection).

But hey, you remove the things mentioned above, and being old is great! You're that much more experienced. You know what you want and what it takes to get it. And I bet your car insurance is super low.

i vote old = terrible

Actually I intend to do just that [eventually]

Fuck being miserable, confused, having no marbles left, drooling, sitting in my own shit waiting for some nurse to change my nappy. (diaper)

I have most of the physical problems mentioned by laugh-a-minute,but don't spend much time thinking about them. OF COURSE I would have loved to have stopped aging at 35,but I didn't. El fucking ,still better than the alternative. I spend my time worrying about things over which I have control. Aging is not on that very short list.

RE: Old age
Getting older has its ups and downs just like being young does, but at my age I don't feel like I want to be younger. Sure I have feelings of nostalgia sometimes but I don't 'pine for the olden days'.

At this point I can't help quoting my favorite author.

Phhbbbttt.... That all started long ago and is at full steam now. Except the bald part, I still have a full crop of hair on me head.

RE: Old age
I'm not that bothered about 'old age' because I live under the delusion/hope/prediction/belief etc. that within the next few years *they will have cracked the ageing/degeneration problem and we'll all end up with the potential of not only living for several centuries but also in a body that is basically ageless.

I've heard it said many times that the first person to live over a thousand years has already been born.

* Whoever they are?
