RE: New Deist user here.
Hey Welcome

I date a deist, we have great sex and a deep romantic relationship - If it's just me and my awesomeness or God I dunno Tongue
Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you

Probably the strongest argument for a god I've ever seen.

To me Deism is more ridiculous than Christianity. At least Christians have a false book and the fear of hell. Desists have nothing but a funny feeling inside.

I think if you need a funny feeling inside just get something tangible like a vibrator.

You're kidding right? It's a lot more reasonable to think there may be a supreme creator of the universe who doesn't intervene with our affairs than to claim a super old book is the absolute truth and leave the problem of evil unsolved. The only difference from deists and atheists, from my experience, is that the former believe there's some sort of creator of the universe, but both have a tendency to be less dogmatic, less fundamentalist and less idiotic. Maybe it's because my girlfriend is a deist, but I don't have a problem with it.

Not really, it's equally reasonable. Let me ask you a question, which is more reasonable..believing in fairies or pixies?
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

I would think those threatening you with eternal torment unless you believe in their imaginary friend, are the dicks. Self-defense is not being a dick. It's having a spine. So, Go Blow Jesus/Allah/Mohamed out your ass is tame if anything.

And Welcome to AF. I'm a former deist myself. Completely got rid of the god nonsense in my mid-20s and haven't looked back since. Deism is one small step from being an atheist anyway.

I think any form of religion which gives attributes to god is automatically more ridiculous than any generic sort of belief in some sort of god.... unless you argue that the concept is already infinitely ridiculous and can't get any more so. But I think there is a big distinction.

It's the idea that faith is a way to gain knowledge, that is the stupidest part of all. That is more stupid in itself than any god.

It may be more (or less) ridiculous, but it doesn't make it more (or less) unreasonable.  Mechanically, the claims are identical. An argument against one can serve as an argument against the other with equal validity and no change -whatsoever- in term or structure.

It's actually less reasonable because there is no motivating factor to make you believe in a god. You have absolutely nothing to go by. It's like you are trying to be more logical than theists but you just don't get there. It's a complete fail.

I understand why some theists believe. They are indoctrinated and or they just don't research it much but they have something tangible making them believe whether it is other people or a false book of shit.

Desists have nothing motivating them to believe other than stupidity. There is no fear of hell motivating you, no retarded ancient book, no church, nothing.

To help put it in perspective, I think I'll become a Leprechaunist. I just believe they left pots of gold out there and then went on their merry way. It just makes me feel warm and fuzzy thinking this.

Welcome.

The trick they're using is Pascal's Wager, and it's easy to sweep off the table. For one thing, it creates a false dichotomy by assuming that either the christian Gaud (and therefore the christian Hell) exist, or no gods (and therefore no hells) exist. To highlight this, ask them if they're worried about going to Muslim hell, or getting reincarnated in one of the Hindu hells, or getting reincarnated as a beetle or some other insignificant thing. They're acting like they have nothing to lose if they're the ones who are wrong, but that's only true if the atheists are right. If anyone else is right, they're just as screwed as anyone who didn't pick that option.
Verbatim from the mouth of Jesus (retranslated from a retranslation of a copy of a copy):

"Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you too will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. How can you see your brother's head up his ass when your own vision is darkened by your head being even further up your ass? How can you say to your brother, 'Get your head out of your ass,' when all the time your head is up your own ass? You hypocrite! First take your head out of your own ass, and then you will see clearly who has his head up his ass and who doesn't." Matthew 7:1-5 (also Luke 6: 41-42)
