Which operating system do you prefer?
#11
RE: Which operating system do you prefer?
I currently use:

Windows 8.1 for daily driving (will be updating to Windows 10)
Linux Mint 17.2 for work
iOS 8.whatever for surfing
Android 5.01 on my phone
PS4 for late night surfing

I've also used OSX, Windows Phone 8.1, and several other linux distros in the past

I'm pretty platform agnostic. They all have their pros and cons, and I'm not one of those "down with corporations!" types.

I like iOS for obvious reasons. Except what they did to my music set up, I can't find the damn thing!

I wouldn't do that, if I were you. At least not before hackers find a way to remove the keylogger integrated in the system and to disable collecting of personal data which includes bank accounts, passwords and stuff like that.

My hubby is a computer programmer, I trust him to install safe software on my computer (or to make it safe).

Everything between XP and 7, since I know the ropes on these babies without having to go through half arsed help explanations. Also 8 and later doesn't run my whole games collection which is the whole point of still having a workstation.

And, oh yes, fuck the touchscreen design of the later systems.

None of that instrumentation is supposed to be in the production builds - only the test builds.

I use OS X for most of my personal stuff, and work. I also have a Linux Mint work laptop, and a Linux Mint netbook for some home stuff. My servers are powered by Ubuntu.

I was a big fan of everything Apple when I was younger. But at the turn of the millenium reality kicked in and I noticed I could buy 4 PCs for the price of one G4.

OS depends on function.

I use:

Windows 7 on most desktops and laptops
Centos for phone server and infrastructure monitoring
Omnios (Solaris fork) for mass data storage, media serving and such (ZFS file system can't be beat)
android for phones

Looking with trepidation at the upcoming Windows 10 stuff/crap. Not a fan of the flat UI, but I'm a stick in the mud, I'm sure.

Whatever gets the job done.

Windows 7 dual booted along with Mint Linux on my primary personal laptop
Windows 8.1 on my travelling personal laptop
Windows 7 on my general purpose (e.g. print) server
Windows 7 on my gaming desktop
FreeBSD / FreeNAS 9.2.1.5 on my NAS / media / cloud server
Some flavor of embedded Linux on a bunch of things (wireless routers, Roku, etc).
Ubuntu 14.04 on three virtual private servers (2 in North America, 1 in Europe)

Windows 7 + Mint Linux in a VM on my work laptop.
Various versions of Red Hat Linux and derivatives on more systems than I can remember at work (the oldest is RHEL ES3, probably 12+ years old)
Even have an HPUX B.11.00 dinosaur that's we still use at work - I believe that one's been in use since 2000.

ZFS is the shit. Don't even think about using it without ECC memory, though.
