Narrowboat Advice

Narrowboat Advice
I'll ask questions on a travel forum or two too, but we have lots of British folk here so I thought I'd ask about my latest travel obsession:  narrow-boats.

Next June we are probably going to go on a month vacation about two thirds in England and the remainder the Netherlands.  One thing I really want to try (and I think I have the family is on board *pun*) is a week long narrow boat trip.  I still haven't nailed down exactly which canal but there's time (though prices for next June go up in about two weeks so we're trying to decide now).

One of the nicest things about traveling Britain for me has been inter village walking.  But our youngest daughter has bunions which limit how much time she can spend on her feet (biking the Netherlands will be great for her).   Most of the canals appear to have good towpaths and they travel at walking speed.  So I'm thinking that the boats will be sort of a cross between hiking and RV camping.

Does anyone out there have any experience narrow boating?  Any tips or suggestion for favorite places to go?  Reasons why it isn't a good idea?  Favorite rental companies. Etc.

I'm looking at trips that are mostly countryside and little villages, though Ely to Cambridge looks very tempting, and not so much industrial trips through Manchester.  http://www.waterwaysholidays.com/cgi-bin/webdata_pro.pl I'm chicken about new skills so I'm looking for a moderate to low number of locks.
If there is a god, I want to believe that there is a god.  If there is not a god, I want to believe that there is no god.
