Q: What is trans-galactic, eternal and omni-everything? A: God, necessarily?

RE: Q: What is trans-galactic, eternal and omni-everything? A: God, necessarily?
I think god is just a concept.

If god is anything it's nothing that exists in this universe or in the multiverse.

To put it another way, god is real because he is not real.

If he were real he wouldn't be god, he would just be a planet sized duke or king or ruler.

You should have seen my writing when I was reading Kant for philosophy. I wonder how many writers that guy has ruined.

Thanks, but both comments are fair. It really is long and complicated - much worse than your mega-sentence. At the same time I wanted to see if I could identify which questions would best get at what I had in mind. If nothing else, I got a little clearer on what strike me as the issues around the god question.

I think I know what you mean.  It is sort of what tips us off that we're talking stories, mythology, psychology when it comes to God.  Not physics, cosmology and all that rot.

I voted just like Vixene: E2, R5, P18.

E2:  Culturally, God is something I'd rather we didn't have and don't need.
R5:  Physically, there could be somewhere an un-caused cause. So R5 is the best choice in the group tho it misses the possibility that reality could be causally cyclic.
P18: Mentally, God is like an annoying advertising jingle you can't get out of your head.  A tiresome and largely useless self perpetuating pattern.
So how, exactly, does God know that She's NOT a brain in a vat? Huh

Glad you could cope with the complexity, Julia. (Not surprised.) It was really difficult to choose descriptors which would likely serve everyone. IF R5 were better written, how do think it should go?

I was not at all trying to be critical of your poll options.
I definitely don't think I could make a better list.
It was my own OCD that made me qualify my answer to R5.
Trying to fully characterize an omni-everything is ultra-ambitious.

God seems to have whatever attributes (or limitations!) are most convenient for the current round of apologetics bullshit.

This is the one power God has that I really can't understand:

God agrees with everyone who believes in him, yet the believers disagree with each other.

God is a safety blanket, and belief is an emotion, apparently in many cases necessary for humans to cope with the indifference of their surroundings.

I guess.  I don't really know because I don't have one of my own.  I would have thought conditioning had more to do with it.

But I can see the coping thing too.  Having been conditioned to imagine God as hovering over your shoulder like a friend who never tires of your hopes and foibles, I suppose you wouldn't experience your surroundings as indifferent.  It is all a background set against which you learn and grow and prove your worth.  This assumes that the conditioning took, of course.

Yes, I think conditioning is why it still exists, and the safety blanket part is why people stay. It's a sticky combination.

Relapsing into religion would always happen when I was emotionally weak. The brainwashing residue would also kick in. But reason wouldn't really do it for me, because the appeal belief had was emotional. I had to realize I'm not a 10yo anymore and I don't need to hide under the blanket to let go of it.
