French-bashing in America is not to be taken seriously. We always find someone to make the butt of our jokes and, in recent years, it has been the French. It really began during WWII. That's when the 'surrender' jokes about France originated. Then, when we went into Iraq, France did not support us, and at the time, most Americans were still buying the lie. That's when the French jokes began in earnest. They are simply jokes. Before the French it was 'Polacks' (the Polish), though I have no idea why.

Why not Americans?? (USA) Why don't you make yourselves the butt of your jokes?? You guys really are funny.

Haha! We do! Republicans make jokes about Democrats (and vice-versa, which applies to all of these). Christians make jokes about atheists. Consumers make jokes about corporations. City dwellers make jokes about rednecks. We constantly make jokes about things that are 'the American Way'. On and on... we make fun of everyone... including ourselves. It's just that it seems like we always have one particular nationality that we pick on more than others. Another favorite target are Canadians... because they are our neighbors. We even make Aussie jokes. Most of the time these jokes are only meant in good fun. I can't explain why or how anyone comes to actually dislike the French (for example). I certainly do not.

Though you must admit that sometimes the 'French' are hilarious!!...have you seen Robin Williams in NY?? He does a great sketch about the 'French'
