They absolutely recognise them when they see them, they just make a conscious/unconscious decision to forget about them and pretend like they don't exist. That's the essence of cherry picking, I believe.

But some of the theists on this board don't even gloss over them, they just assume it can't be *that* bad because why would it be in the bible (or whatever) if it was? It's all part of the greater good, so even the bad bits are good.

Well it's kind of the same thing really. Instead of pretending like they don't exist outright they might choose to rationalise by saying to themselves "it's not that bad". It all falls under cognitive dissonance in the end.
