Test my belief system

RE: Test my belief system
1. I would say that survival is the greatest instinct, or motivating factor for actions. I think we're just using slightly different meanings of "purpose" Smile

2. OK! I love you too Smile I'm saying that if I'm forced to answer whether I "believe in God", no is the better answer. I'd prefer to not answer at all and ask wtf a god is so I can understand the question.

RE: Test my belief system
The purpose of life is to survive. In other words, the purpose of life is to live.
I don't understand what your meaning of "purpose" is?If you don't mind could you tell me what you mean by it? Smile

RE: Test my belief system
I'm talking about inherent purpose, an intended function from some sort of intelligence. Life was not created by an intelligence, nor is it achieving any specific goals laid out by any intelligence.

What I'm saying is that any "purpose" is merely subjective, it requires an intelligence to make that judgement. And the properties of a thing are not changed by someone's opinion of its purpose.

To put it another way, from the point of view of an intelligence not inside our reality, who doesn't care about anything that goes on in it, what does life "achieve"?

Shock

Did I pass?

To add to my waffle about purpose, I'd say survival is an aim of most life forms (consciously or otherwise) but that there was no purpose behind life forms being "created" in the first place. Of course, to us, things have all sorts of purposes, because they are significant or achieve something in particular.

To try and explain... me driving my car to London has no inherent purpose to it. The purpose only comes about by me planning to do something in London, and as such the purpose is to get me to London. So it is a subjective purpose. To someone else, they may consider the thing I'm planning to do in London serves no purpose at all because it's of no significance to them or they think it's a waste of time. But they may acknowledge it has purpose to me. That's the thing, without a thinking agent to assign purpose, there is none; that's what I mean by "inherent". In contrast, the mass of an object for example is not subjective, it is inherent.

From the universe's point of view, nothing I do serves any purpose, because there is no objective goal being set or achieved.

RE: Test my belief system
Objectively speaking, the purpose of life is to survive.
We can make up a lot of subjective purposes for life because us humans tend to find the objective purpose,i.e,to survive, not enough to thrive through life.

Survival is not just an aim of most life forms.Survival is the purpose of all life forms.

OK, well I think we're juggling semantics there, so I'll leave that one Smile I do understand exactly what you mean, and if we agreed on terminology, we would agree on this point too.

Thanks for your questions, and the feedback! I appreciate it.

RE: Test my belief system
I'll answer it...
We live because we are here...
We didn't ask to be born or to even evolve, we're just here.
Ask Mother nature why she did it? She'll say: you shouldn't be asking me, I'm in construction only, ask the singularity who created me out of nothing...
Then we ask the singularity and it says: You don't technically exist! Your negative "other" cancels out your existence, what you are experiencing as consciousness is just a byproduct of space time. It's only temporary, please ignore.

hehe

RE: Test my belief system
The purpose of "life" may well be to keep my delusion going as long as possible, for whatever nefarious reason.

Maybe I did it to myself. Maybe this is what I thought would be an amazing VR game, and I've forgotten how I can turn it off.

RE: Test my belief system
Rob, to extrapolate from that, we are sentient, have consciousness, and understand the concept of "consequences".
To think that 99.99999999999999999999999999999999999999% of the universe is not even aware that it, itself exists does in fact make us special.

Maybe in a meaningless sort of way. What do you think? Don't go all tardy on me now!
