My husband left for a trip and I'm bored. Meaning It's one of those evenings where I look for any excuse to post lol. 

I was browsing my facebook news feed today and came across this article called The Secular Case Against Gay Marriage, posted by an acquaintance on my friend's list. I thought it was very out of character and was curious to hear you guys' opinions/comments/counter arguments on the points being made. Fire away!!

Her basic argument is something like, if males had only been allowed to own slaves in the 19th century, it would have been dumb for females to fight for that right rather than abolishing the institution itself. And she then makes the case that marriage is a flawed institution which cannot be fixed for the following reasons:
1. Employer benefits are limited to married persons, punishing those that choose not to be married.
2. Pressures not to divorce because of consequences keep people trapped in abusive relationships.
3. The idea of monogamy bars possible loving relationships with others.
4. Legal right of access makes the state a third party to your marriage.

Hence, gays and lesbians should not support the right to marry.

I knew this was bullshit when I read #2: Lesbians do not have higher-than-average rates of HIV. The mechanics of lesbian sex, while not making it impossible, make it far less likely for them to catch, let alone spread, STDs.

Yup. If god created AIDS and other STDs in order to punish the adulterers and such, as many devout f***wits claim - he must LOVE lesbians, since they have way lower STD rates than any heterosexuals - with the possible exception of people abstaining from sex altogether.

I am not anti gay marriage.  I am anti gay adopting.  But the one piece of data that counters that view is "regular" parents and "regular adopting parents" can be so abusive why not offer children to nice parents.  So I think I am even begining to change that self inflicted view.

I add that because I want to be clear that I am not saying that one is perfectly safe regarding HIV if one has lesbian sex.  But it is much, much safer than heterosexual sex.

Trust me, if there was any way I could have lesbian sex, I would. I have had sex with a lesbian friend but she was pretty penis-phobic. Still there was something nice about that stolen-watermelon, even if I didn't get to spray her with any juice.
