China is not a totalitarian state by the standard normally applied to qualify Soviet Union and Nazi Germany to be totalitarian states. It's highly authoritarian, but rather less authoritarian than many right wing dictatorships the west supported during the Cold War that were deemed less than totalitarian. The capitalism in China is not unchained. It is overtly not subject to some of the constraints which the American system would like the world to think the American system binds itself with. But it is subject to powerful central planning and control influence, which the capitalists in China defy at serious risk to their own lives, that the America has never seen except during WWII.
Interesting. I turn a skeptical eye towards this in the same way I do religion because I don't have all the facts. I would bet against it being quite as bad as this article makes it out to be but I wouldn't be too surprised if it really is. From what little I have researched on the subject, it does sound like China went all-in on their meteoritic manufacturing rise. They massively exploit the workers. Most of their companies obviously take no pride in their product, cutting costs wherever possible at the expense of quality. If you're going to go in that direction, it's not a stretch at all to put aside safety and environmental responsibility. The consequences this report claims is a logical outcome of such a policy but I would have expected it to take much more time.
I'll be looking for further news of this with interest. Thanks for posting, Min.

And as China degrades environmentally, there will (eventually) be life forms that will adapt to the conditions there.
Pretty unlikely it will be the pandas doing it, they're toast, but rats, feral dogs, germs, weeds, certain insects are all going to evolve and find things pleasant there. The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.
OK so ecological disaster in China is still prevailing news and since people in China can't discuss it we can.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"
