No offence to my American friends, but when I was growing up I would hear many 'only in America" type stories like this - usually of someone dying doing something stupid (don't get me wrong, there are plenty of fucking idiots in Oz, too).
There were too many for me to take them seriously...until...
A few years after I left school, a friend moved to Atlanta. Within a week she told me about a guy who was moving to another town and, since he didn't have enough rope couldn't tie down all his gear. With a large mattress on a trailer behind his car, and no rope to hold it down, he decided to lie on it to hold it in place.
Driving down the highway, at high speed, the wind lifted the mattress, guy and all, on it fell onto the highway.
He apparently survived hitting the road, but not the big rig that was behind his car.

This might sound callous, but there are many useless deaths in this world. My compassion for idiots bringing it on themselves is rather limited compared to someone having some freak accident.
I agree entirely. My compassion really only extends to the children.

I have to agree. Like the child eating breakfast in some Chicago slum, struck by a stray bullet from gang idiot.
I'll never forget a short article I read from the U.S. military newspaper, Pacific Stars and Stripes in early 1989. It was a DOD newspaper we received in Korea (and throughout the Pacific theater) and it had an amusing news blurb from each of the fifty states. I'll never forget the one from California. There was a guy killed while mooning cars in the Pacific State Highway or some such thing. He wasn't in the breakdown lane while doing this. He was standing in one of the southbound lanes showing a northern lunar face. He was a struck by one car, propelled several hundred feet and subsequently run over by three other cars. I could just imagine the police and insurance report filled out by the driver who hit the idiot. I can also imagine what the responsible official said to his family who had to report the incident. How do you tell parents that their son died mooning cars in the middle of a freeway? That's a job for George Carlin or Dennis Leary.
