Rule of Thumb

RE: Rule of Thumb
My empirically obtained rule of thumb for scheduling when writing publications and books:

If you think your project will be finished tomorrow, it will take another week. If you think it will be finished in two weeks, the actual time needed for completion is undetermined.
The fool hath said in his heart, There is a God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

Can you or anybody here ever remember seeing a medieval movie where the person/persons opening up the massive draw bridge or gate, actually do it following real world leverage physics? Just watched a Clive Owen "Knight" movie and a person half opened up a 10 ton iron gate with one turn of the wheel! Shit like that just wreck it for me!
(And don't even start me on the "sound" of the Photon Torpedos and Plasma Cannons in space!)  hehe

Honestly, I don't think I've ever seen anything in a movie use proper leverage physics, ever. Then again, I guess if it took several minutes to raise-lower a prop, it would eat up an inordinate amount of screen time unless they made it seem a little faster.

THX certified ship vibrations! I love it!

It's a little sad we have to indoctrinate our minds just to enjoy a bloody movie isn't it? hehe

If someone says "Enter your PIN number", they don't know what PIN stands for.

If you're counting and you have to go to your toes for number 10, you've probably lost a finger.

If a woman is pregnant in a movie/show, she will always give birth at a really inconvenient moment.

If you've got a really simple answer to a difficult question that no one else has ever been able to figure out, you've probably got the wrong answer. Especially if it's goddidit.

Quote:The opening of the black gate in LOTR seems to be compatible with known Troll physics.

Irrelevant as (according to canon), the Morannon are magical gates, under Sauron's personal control.

Quote:I always rationalized the torpedo and phaser sounds thusly - the firing creates a strong electromagnetic field which induces vibration in nearby ship hulls resulting in the perceived sound Smile

Reasonable, but this doesn't explain why, in wide shots with the POV outside any of the ship, we still hear the weapons (we also hear their impact on targets).

You're telling me the only Hollywood siege gate that follows physics is the one that specifically defies physics because it's magic?

Fuckin' Hollywood...

You'll lose her in the same manner that you got her.
I can't remember where this verse is from, I think it got removed from canon:

"I don't hang around with mostly men because I'm gay. It's because men are better than women. Better trained, better equipped...better. Just better! I'm not gay."

For context, this is the previous verse:
