I've read about new Orkney discoveries in passing, but nothing specific.

Honestly I don't see what is so puzzling here. We know the ancient britans had a very functional society and even had simple in door plumbing in their homes.

Is this the same one they found last year? IIRC they did a massive scan, using ground penetrating radar, and found loads of things they didn't know about before.
