Benedict apparently hasn't read the Gospels carefully. John 20:6,7 describes the burial clothes which had been left behind in the tomb, "He saw the lines cloths lying there, and the fact cloth, which had been on Jesus' head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself." This doesn't sound to me as if Jesus was wrapped in a shroud for his burial.

There is one other place in the Bible that gives information on how people were prepared for burial. John chapter 11 tells how Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead. Verse 44 says, "The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped in a cloth." It appears that it was the custom of the Jews to wrap the dead in strips of cloth in a way similar to the way the Egyptians wrapped up mummies for burial. The practice of wrapping corpses in a shroud didn't come into use until later.

Actually, Theo, John 20 does coincide with an actual archaeological find from just last year.

Radiocarbon tests and artefacts found in the cave prove almost beyond doubt that it was from the same time of Christ's death.

It was made with a simple two-way weave - not the twill weave used on the Turin Shroud, which textile experts say was introduced more than 1,000 years after Christ lived.

Now, don't get too excited. This does not mean the John fable is true....merely that whoever wrote it had some knowledge of ancient Jewish burial techniques.

Really? I didn't know that. I'm shocked that no one told me at the Catholic school I attended. I gather that's been known for a century or so.(?) Strange that the church has never mentioned it. A cynical person might think they don't want anyone to know. Thank goodness I'm gullible..

It's one thing when after 60 years of alien "landings," people are still thinking Roswell is true...it's another when after 600 years of religious "miracles" people are still thinking this Shroud shit is true. 540 years from now are people going to be holding the alien dogma just as sacred?

How many times do these things have to keep falling back into our laps after irrefutable evidence to the contrary?
