To spank or not to spank?

It is very confusing for my libido when you refer to yourself as daddy in this context...just saying

I could never understand the guys that like being called daddy during sex. That's just  oedipal and creepy.

My wife used to do that, but after I informed her that I found it entirely off-putting she stopped. I didn't shame her, and don't shame others that like it, but it's a sure way to get me out of the mood.

I'm not saying I think you're a horrible child abusing parent. I hardly know you and I can see that you love your kids. I know kids do stupid dangerous shit all the time. I have kids. But I think spanking is the wrong reaction. It's easy and it works sometimes, but I think it's cruel and unnecessary.

That, is where you are wrong, at least in my case (I make no assumptions about others).  It's not easy.  It's the last thing I want to do, and even though it does seem to work on those rare occasions it's employed, I'm still no more enamored with it on account of that.  It's my parenting equivalent of a nuke.  I think that it -is- cruel, it's never a necessity...but if every situation were ideal and every method could be employed without complication or compromise then we'd have no need to discuss discipline, danger, or spanking.....our kids wouldn't do strange and ruinous things, and we, as parents, would always have the best possible response to whatever it is they dreamt up anyway. I don't live in that world, my kids are not those kids, and I am not that parent.

I would clarify that when I said it's easy, I meant it takes less work than many other parenting techniques. Not that it's something that would be easy to do. I don't think I could do it if I somehow found myself in a position where it was necessary.

I think that you may not know yourself as well, in that regard, as you think you do.  You might do -anything- to keep your kids from harm.  At least that's what we tell ourselves, and what a variety of strange stories we're never short of pan out about those of us who deeply love the spawn. Course, you could always lean on your partner when the will-to-do falters, which is pretty much how I ended up in the disciplining role. I wasn't very keen on being the "rules and order and punishments" parent, but my wife finds it difficult-impossible to raise her voice at them, let alone hurt their feelings, their pride, or their cute little butts.

On my end, in response to your clarification..spanking is something that I find much more difficult than any of my other means. Most of the things I do are second nature to me at this point, spanking just isn't. I spend about half the year as a stay at home dad, and the other half I'm a stay at home dad that works when the kids are sleeping/at school - essentially.

I am joyously lacking in the parental partner area. Considering the abuse that my older 2 children and I suffered from my ex husband and the emotional damage that I still have to overcome on a daily basis, I don't think I could ever be comfortable handing over the reigns to anyone else.

Maybe not, and I completely understand, both on why you wouldn't hand over the reigns - and why you feel the way you do about spanking.  It's not something I spend much time advocating for myself.
