Rupert Murdoch once said during the Leverson Inquiry that Fox News was not a news network. It is an entertainment network.
Alot of people saw that as simply evading the issues at hand but if you for a moment accept that as a sincere reply alot of things make sense. Bill O'Reily went to Harvard. Despite how he presents himself he is an educated, caculating and intelligent man. Why does he not know how tides work then? Why make such obvious contradictions? Why even work at Fox? Because he is playing a role. A character he never breaks out of in public. Once you accept that everything else makes sense. Fox employs some really clever people and some really crazy people. The result is a network that appeals to both lunatics and people who enjoy laughing at the absurd. In the book "Atheist In A Fox Hole" the author comes out and says that their target audience is crazy people because they are the most loyal audience. I will go one further and say that it also attracts a loyal audience of people who enjoy watching the spectacle. The entire thing is dependent on people not knowing whether to take it seriously or not. The reason the ratings of Fox News kill things like The Daily Show or The Colbert Report is because at no point do they openly say its a satire. Their high ratings are dependent on the possibility in peoples minds that it could be real. I think this is well known by everyone who has any control over the network. Putting a combination of lunatics and fantastic actors on TV is a calculated and cunning move to obtain the most ratings of any news network or entertainment network.

I agree with Drake.
If you're going to point at one, you should point at all that take a position/slant/express an opinion (right or left). It ceases to be news. Or it is tainted news. I'm not sure that we have a "neutral" news source in the US any more. Maybe PBS.
Being told you're delusional does not necessarily mean you're mental.

I read an actually realistic and reasonable post on Fox News online about Ahmed Muhammad and his clock.
I can't find it anymore. Meh, I guess it was a Hallucination. |
