Craig Venter and his team have created a living organism from scratch, going as far as to code an email address into the DNA which can be used if anyone cracks the code they created.

Of course, religious leaders are now claiming he is just playing God, despite the fact that these organisms could be created to provide a range of functionality beneficial to huminty, including creating biofuels and removing CO2 from the atmosphere.

I'm not sure. I'm a bit confused because the Guardian reported this today, yet the Science article is dated two years ago:

The paper is apparently from 2008: http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/abstract/1151721

Not sure if it's just a server error or whether it took that long to get attention :S
