Tack didn't do it, Hitchslap did it. Angel

Well, there wasn't a rat emote; figure, same difference. As for the OP we're all atheists, agnostic about something. People who say otherwise are insecure. Wink

Well I wanted to see if someone wanted to continue a discussion on agnosticism, but apparently it was just nostalgia and a drive by resurrection. Oh well.. back to the doldroms for you thread..

This thread was on the first page when I first came here. I didn't intend to bring up a zombie thread for no reason.

I don't have a problem with necroposting if the topic is relevant. We have been known to merge certain topics if they happen to be about the same things.

I've heard quite a few definitions of agnostic (most of them wrong), but "not taking a position" I don't think is one of them. The closest would be "maybe God exists", which is partially accurate, although not wholly.

The correct definition is "the view that the existence of god is unknown or unknowable. It deals solely with knowledge and not belief so agnosticism is not a belief and therefore not related to theism or atheism."

I'm not sure you're right about this Tiberius. I don't see why I should have to generalize my lack of knowledge regarding gods to be classified as an agnostic.

Whether gods exist is certainly not something I know about. (I'm not ever quite sure what we are talking about where gods are concerned but that is yet another question.) I do not know if other people have encountered gods and therefore I'm not ready to concede that knowledge of gods is not possible. Some say they have. I'm not willing to change my beliefs based on their eye witness accounts but I don't know for a fact they are mistaken.

With the amount of repeated topics of threads, that would be a horrendously big task to do it retroactively...

RE: POLL: What's your definition of an agnostic? Atheist?
I do find that lots of people use "agnostic" to mean something like "atheist lite" .. or a lower degree of certainty about their lack of belief.

Of course the two questions are completely separate. I would say that I have 100% no belief in god. As an atheist I question if anyone has any less belief in gods than I since I have none.

At the same time I am completely agnostic. Not only do I not know if gods exist, I don't even know if anyone else knows.

Hell, I sometimes wonder what the hell is meant by gods at all. So put me down for a side order of ignosticism. Since I don't know what gods are how could I possibly know if anyone else has had or could have a close encounter with one? You'd need more knowledge of god than I have to know whether god is knowable so I'd say I'm also 100% agnostic. (In other words, it beats the shit out of me.)

Finally there is the question of how much any of this matters to me. Not much. I scarcely give a shit, really. I can't think of any plans or decisions I'm putting off until I get to the bottom of the god question. But I'm probably not 100% apatheist. I have some empathy for those who are born into a religious cult and are forced to curtail their intellectual development in order to navigate around the god delusion. There but for the grace of .. whatever .. go you or I.

Every religious person is in reality Agnostic even if they dont realize it, if you know theres a god (gnostic) you probably had an experience which can in reality be demonsterable to whats happening in the brain, nothing supernatural.

Which is why I have slaves mods to do such tasks. :p

First - an Agnostic is NOT an atheist

Second

THERE are several different types of agnostics

While theists like to claim that agnostics are people who are unsure - Huxley would argue against that one.

He said that an agnostic is a person who has NO real KNOWLEDGE of a god - and of course that includes EVERYONE.

However - he would go on to say that an agnostic one who accepts the existence of ALL GODS that are PROVEN to exist in reality.

TOO bad none are
