Who is excited about the new Star Trek series?

RE: Who is excited about the new Star Trek series?
I'm excited and scared at the same time.

I wish I could find this old photo I have of myself back when I worked. Our office had an annual Halloween contest, and each team got to dress up their whole area. We did TOS. The guy in the cubical next to mine was also a huge fan, and happened to looks like a short James Dohan, so he went as Scotty, and he built a transporter down on our end (circles of plexiglass you could stand on that set off some flashlights behind colored celphane). It looked really cool. He also made a little dilithium chamber, I loaned him some large hunks of quarts, and another small flashlight.

I took 4 refrigerator boxes and spray painted them all grey, cut them up and and built the bridge outside our team leaders office. There were all the upper displays with xmas lights, and the lower display panels as well as the science station. We also created a little rec room, with a tridimensional chess board I built, some blue water in a decanter and some trippy win glasses for the Romulan ale, and a few other things like round cards.

We also had one whole cubicle filled with tribbles (which were also here and there all over), and music playing through our whole area. It was tons of fun. Every single team member dressed up, we had crew members and romulans and one guy even dressed up quite accurately as Harry Mudd. We won first prize, dinner out at McMenamins for the whole team, including drinks!

Anywho, I've also been to a couple of conventions (I own a collectors plate of Data signed by Brent Spiner who I actually got to talk to for about 3 seconds!), and I STILL have a TOS uniform in the "dress up" area of my closet. I even have boots for it....
I bought the collectors edition of Time when Nimoy died. My husband teases me because it is still sitting on my nightstand. I will put it away eventually.

So to say I'm a fan is, perhaps, an understatement. I am not, however, pissed about the new movies or the alternate universe. I am open to new interpretations, as long as they don't suck ass. I tried to get into Enterprise, but failed. I managed to watch most of Voyager, but that pretty much took everything I had.

So yeah, I'm excited, but also scared.

Apparently theres an urban legend that the new star trek theme has hidden in it the audio capture of Gene Roddenberrys spirit weeping as he watches his brain child systematically raped by producers and writers fresh from buzzfeed.
I know what you're thinking; "deep space nine era or first star trek reboot". The answer is both. They spliced both tortured cries into a truly haunting howl that will persist in your dreams for decades to come. If rumors are accurate we can expect a remix from darkmau5 any day now.

Yeah, between that, Civil War and BvS, there's precious little hype left in the tank atm. I'll probably be more excited later next year Big Grin

I'm surprised so many seem to not like DS9.  It's different, to be sure, but I thought it was wonderful.  Sisko is a pretty complex character, and the actor chews scenery with the best of them.  I mean, Picard wouldn't do this:

Plus, it had the Defiant, my favorite ship, and Garak, one of the most brilliant characters Trek has ever had.

Voyager sucked.  Badly.  The entire series should've been the Year of Hell two-parter.  Dwindling resources, a ship slowly losing the battle of attrition, people dying and not being replaced.  Instead, it was TNG-lite.  They ruined Q, ruined the Borg, the Species 8-blahblahblah guys were boring, the Kazon were boring.  The writing was so uneven and self-contradictory between episodes that Kate Mulgrew has said that she played Janeway as though she was bipolar.  Garret Wang was a useless waste of space that they were going to kill off because he sucked, but then he was named one of People's most beautiful people, so they killed off Kes instead.  And, somehow, Neelix lived the entire time.

Enterprise was terrible until the 4th season when Berman and Braga turned the reigns over to Manny Coto.  Suddenly, he's trying to fix the Vulcans being assholes for no good reason, introducing the Romulans, and basically fulfilling the promise that, hey, this actually is the show that highlights how the Federation came together.  His fixes didn't all work (Archer being a proxy for Vulcan Jesus was odd to say the least, for example), but at least he recognized the problems.  And then B&B had to fuck it all up with that abortion of a finale that made the entirety of Enterprise less important to the franchise than an unremarkable late season episode of TNG.  Good job, guys.

---

Regarding the upcoming series, I'm not very interested.  The reboot movies, while fun with their bombastic exuberance, are pretty dumb.  Add in the fact that, outside of the pilot, all episodes will be on CBS's paid streaming service, and I can't really get myself to care.  I foresee Apple Store interiors, lots of beautiful people, and steamy sexual encounters.

Sisko is a Captain, I don't care what anyone says. And he's a great character.

But my favorite captain will always be Hikaru Sulu. Hands down, my favorite captain, especially for this one moment:

Sisko, and DS9 as a whole, are greatly underrated.

I think Avery Brooks played the character brilliantly.

Sure, there were some truly awful episodes and storyline, "Move Along Home", for example. But there were also some of the best Trek episodes, in my opinion, ever made. Watch "The Visitor" for an example.

And, as Kevin mentioned, who doesn't like the Defiant?

Voyager, I liked, once the show found its feet. It's just a pity that they ended the series, as with DS9, with a pretty weak premise.

Enterprsie, while it had some good episodes, was the weakest of the "modern" Treks.

Oh, and the best character in the entire Trek universe has to be Garak.

I'll put in my plugs for DS9, Sisko, Garack and the awesome, In The Pale Moonlight - IMO, the best series, characters and episode in all of Star Trek.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.
