The Not-so-elephant In The Room

Your own well-being matters to you, therefore things do matter. Mayhaps not in a universal way, for the purpose of this conversation, but on a lesser, human scale, things do matter. Surely, you hold that to be the case?

The only person who's confused is you. I'm not being misleading. I'm saying quite clearly that nothing actually matters. Which in the context of what I said, was obviously meant to be taken as an objective view.

Subjectively, ofcourse things matter to each person. But the point that sailed over your head is that because things objectively don't actually matter, what you subjectively choose to be bothered by, is exactly that, subjective.

You asked a fairly simple question in the OP and I answered it. Now you're just trying to be a dickwad by attempting to argue with people when there isn't even an argument.

Why is it in every post I see you make, someone will make a point where the meaning is obvious, but you blatantly misconstrue their post in order to make yourself sound intellectually superior and give the impression as though "you know what you're talking about" and everyone else doesn't. It's not a very nice habit.

Well, sorry if you can't have a discussion about such topics. Maybe you shouldn't frequent a forum if you expect everyone to agree with you. I didn't think I was being rude, I was just speaking my mind and telling you what your statement sounded like to me, truthfully.

In other words, you seem to be a coward.

There never was any objective meaning to begin with. To negate that is beside the point. So pardon me if I just ignored that kind of pointless statement, I wouldn't have thought you were simplistic enough to point that kind of thing out.

Inanimate objects can't have meaning in and of themselves, without a conscious being infusing them with it. That's obviously true. So why bother pointing it out?

I would call an objective meaning that which would be beneficial to human society or relevant to the survival of the human species as a whole. I would feel extremely confortable calling that objective. I don't see any point in talking about things that clearly don't make any sense, though.

It's funny, how shocked some folks get at that word, "faithless". I think it's because they conflate the two different connotations of the root of the word, one being unevidenced belief, the other being loyalty.

That mental disconnect allows me good time to escape a dreary conversation about my mortal soul. Smile

And in my case it's just an excuse to post some music I like Tongue

Yea I guess I'm just having one of those can't take a joke kind of mornings. I should be back to normal after a few pots of coffee. In the meantime, feel free to ignore me lol

Evolution. Humans evolved with flawed perceptions. No different than seeing a butterfly in an ink blot.

Dawkins in "The God Delusion" describes this flaw in perceptions as " the moth mistaking the light bulb for moonlight".

In the case of humans we simply project our qualities and desires on non human things. The word for that is "anthropomorphism".

I just drink regular coffee. I ground my coffee beans, and I let my coffee pot slowly brew that black elixir of life, then I pour it into a mug, and finally I savor every glorious drink.
