What a Pastor told me about my thoughts.

What a Pastor told me about my thoughts.
Here is what a Pastor said to me after we had some e-mail discussions about the Bible and Christianity.

"I am glad that we had this exchange, regardless if you have been satisfied with my answers or not. Contact me again in the future if I can be of any further service to you.

I will continue praying for the salvation of your eternal soul. You know, if what you believe is true, about the here and now being all there is, then all that you are going through is really an effort in futility, because when you die, all that you have lived for will be meaningless. Without a resurrection, and that unto life, you have led no more than a miserable life."

Does that make any scene to anyone? It sounds pretty mean actually telling me my life is meaningless if I don't believe in the after life and heaven and hell. What a bunch of wackos!

I always like what H. L. Mencken said about preachers.

Quote:What is the function that a clergyman performs in the world? Answer: he gets his living by assuring idiots that he can save them from an imaginary hell.
-- H L Mencken

This guy sounds like a perfect example of that. He's a con artist and you are threatening to expose his scam. He doesn't care a shit about you but he is deathly afraid that some of his paying customers might come to doubt, too. That he cannot afford.

How can he make the assumption that all you have lived for is meaningless? Does he know everything you've done in your life? Furthermore, how come a single resurrection suddenly makes *everything* meaningful???

I would say "Think how miserable you will be if you find out your religion is a lie, there is no ressurection and you have already wasted all that you have."
I believe thats why they don't want to admit that they are wrong.

Maybe send him back this:

"I am glad that we had this exchange, regardless if you have been satisfied with my answers or not. Contact me again in the future if I can be of any further service to you.

I will not start praying for the salvation of your eternal soul, for you as I have no need for such a thought construct that robs us from our intellect and humanity. You know, if what you believe is true, about the here and now being not all there is, then all that you are going through is really an effort in futility, because when you die, all that you have lived will be a lie. Without the resurrection thing, and that unto life, you have led no more than a miserable life."

Maybe others here can enhance this with some more viciousness in the spirit that your christian friend presented to you.

That's a mighty arrogant assumption, considering he knows nothing about you.

But then again, when have we known religious people like that to not be arrogant?
