If you're agnostic about god, why are you obsessing about Christian theology? I'm a former Hindu and so all of this is just make believe fantasy to me.

Hel (the place) is called after Hel (the goddess) - Loki's daughter. The latter presides over the former, and the name of the place was gradually adopted as the name of the Christian underworld as that particular religion spread across Europe.

As to what 'Hel' means as a personal name, I haven't got a clue.

It's a herd because they follow the big wig leader.  The angels could also be called a flock because they have wings.  Whatever you want to call angels or demons they are ugly, nasty, disgusting creatures.
